James Lindsay brought up a good point about this and Peter Boghossian has gone through a good 2nd point about this.

Firstly, if you spend your whole career trying to be an academic and then must sacrifice it before tenure, it's not an easy pill to swallow to have to abandon the future you've set out for.

Secondly, if you have tenure, they'll launch any BS they can to still get you out.

Academia is fundamentally broken. There is no fixing it.
