Officers are a different animal. Officers are like business execs - trying to climb the seniority ladder, motivated primarily by personal advancement, willing to do anything to get ahead. Country comes second to officers. Especially General officers, who are basically politicians.

Never assume that just because someone wears the uniform that they're a patriot. The higher you move up the chain, the less likely that is to be the case. You climb to the top the way every other executive type climbs to the top - by looking out for yourself and doing whatever you have to to get ahead.
