It was showing stress from travel and pictures are from it was still tied up, so people are railing on it/freaking out/etc. It left it's original home as a gorgeous tree, but people think NY mayor/governor hates Christmas so they did it on purpose. Kinda ridiculious; i'm waiting to pass judgement until they get it set up to go. The trees look like that EVERY year when it arrives, but no one usually pays attention
You're welcome! I personally think it's adorable, and it'll look awesome once they get it rearranged. It's just a matter of everyone freaking out because we're so used to being attacked (which I can also understand). Hop on over to the Rockefellers twitter to take a look at it- and the adorable owl they found in the tree (gotten a clean bill of health and has been released! yay!)

Really though, It's a matter of stress from being pulled out of the ground/loosing some of the roots (which I'm guessing they would have- or should have- looked at properly before digging it up), not having a lot of water in the meantime, the stress from being on the road for 2 days, being tied up (hence the loose of needles) and so on.
Obviously it's possible the tree just decided to say fuck you on it's way there and died? But it looked gorgeous (and it was already near the end of it's lifespan when they removed it from it's home) when submitted.
I'm all for attacking those who attack us, but I'm also a firm believer in not putting malice in where there was none! The Rockefeller Center tree is an important tradition. I hope it looks kick ass when decorated and such.
