As someone who was taking online work at your own pace courses, I quit school once they said all classes must be held through Zoom. (Which makes no sense to include work at your own pace classes)

I refuse to use zoom for any reason

It is bizarre Zoom came out of nowhere. Video conferencing has been around for a long time. They came in and got tons of media attention. Felt very coordinated.

How long before? Not very, I bet. WebEX used to be the standard...even some Skype. Then this new product happen to come along at just the right time. I remember people pushing Zoom knowing based on the rock bottom quotes they were giving they were purposely undercutting competitors in order to flood the market. I am familiar with it, and the timeline as I also work in that same field.

CCP released a virus and was ready with a video conferencing app to help everyone work remotely. Worked out so well!!!

I've been using Jitsi to ween my family off facebook for video calls. It's amazing how much better the call quality is when it's not being shunted through seven different countries for monitoring purposes.

We just switched back to teams. Even though it's Microsoft, it works better than zoom.

Don't forget that Zoom got big on the promise of being End to End Encrypted but in fact was running a man in the middle attack to scan all conversations.

(They lost a lawsuit for this false claim).

If you stream it across the internet, somebody is watching it. Spyware or not.

hloblart 1 point ago +1 / -0

Not if peer-to-peer and encrypted. None of the common office conference solutions do that though.

Can be hacked together pretty easily with ffmpeg if you know each others ip addresses and have firewalls configured properly. Not convenient at all though

I used Zoom before the pandemic. While I'm not about to say that the company itself is great, they really don't have any competitors. No other video conferencing platform is as seamless or reliable.

That said, we need a better product as a replacement if we really want people to stop using it.

Goto meeting made improvements this year to function more like zoom. It is what we use at work and it works pretty well.

My employer uses RingCentral...

2
MakeAmericaLegendary 2 points ago +2 / -0

Is it any decent?

3
lustmorden 3 points ago +3 / -0

I haven't had any problems with it. I used Zoom once, they seem similar.

1
hloblart 1 point ago +1 / -0

We have been using Microsoft for it during the pandemic, never had a problem with it for teleconferencing.

The copy paste on the text chat is another story.

Skype is comparatively painful to use, in my experience. It works.

1
hloblart 1 point ago +1 / -0

Was referring to Teams.

2
MakeAmericaLegendary 2 points ago +2 / -0

Fair enough. MS has their hand in everyone's pie.

Teams is considerably better as it was built from the ground up for business. Skype is just a mess if you have more than like 3 people.

They have plenty of competitors and while you may have had smooth operation, my company refuses to use it due to system stability issues it has caused us.

Zoom got into everywhere due to their generally decent quality service, cheap pricing and targeting schools and non profits much like Apple did back in the day.

They might work and are cheap, but they aren’t the best.

Jitsi?

2
gqsone 2 points ago +2 / -0

Fuck zoom, haven't used it once.

2
some_random_dude 2 points ago +2 / -0

Are they still the ONLY teleconference service that still requires a binary (spyware) browser plugin? Google, Jitsi, GTM, Bluejeans et al are all plugin-free on Chromium based browsers now ...

Looks a little suspicious, no, tech pedes?

2
BunnyPicnic 2 points ago +2 / -0

Whatever happened to face time? It just disappeared. I refuse to use any of it. I might if I had grandkids I couldn't see 1000s of miles away. But for fucks sake, we got along just fine with pictures. Next we'll need live feeds of everyone.

i've been using WebEx for nearly a decade...which has the same ability of group video calling, sharing screens etc....I immediately wondered why Zoom came out of no where. Most likely because Cisco charges for their product.

Zoom may very well be compromised by CCP, but it’s been around in the conferencing space for quite awhile, certainly longer than since 2019 (I realize that’s probably a stock reference).

They did not come out of nowhere.

0
maleitch 0 points ago +1 / -1

Their success certainly did.

2
1A_FTW 2 points ago +2 / -0

No it didn’t. They were widely used among schools, colleges, non profits, health care facilities and other such organizations.

They did not come out of nowhere and they were already successful, at least as to how widespread their use was.

The “pandemic“ just created great marketing atmosphere for them and others like Microsoft teams which also seemed to capitalize heavily on it. Of course the media pushed it as part of their propaganda campaign.

Yeah- we homeschool and Zoom has been the go-to choice for about seven years for both local classes and several major online teaching companies.
