Theoretically, I could keep U.S. citizenship and work remotely abroad. But I agree, Japan (understandably) can be hostile to outsiders. I don't blame them a bit for that, but it stinks for any of us. When you say places that aren't nations, what do you have in mind?

Avoid nation-states. Any county that has a majority of its population one nationality. They will have high cultural nationalism levels, since everyone's the same ethnicity.

Suggested nations? As someone who would be willing to learn a new language, any Spanish speaking nation would be good for me (Mexico for me), Brazil (if you're rich), and other similar nations in the western hemisphere. Avoid South Africa, or any African nation for that matter. Obviously very unstable and you'll be under Chinese rule at this point.

Eastern Europe could be good, but like you said, if a large war breaks out, you're in trouble. Australia and NZ aren't good options with their cozying up to China. Russia would likely be an option, but adjusting to their ruling system would be difficult. Philippines seems good, but I have no idea how safe or unsafe it is.

Honestly I would stay in the western hemisphere, personally Mexico. large population, catholic (no super different religion with different laws), spanish is easy to learn, and depending on where you live it can be quite safe.
