What is going on is that times of trouble unmask the smoke and mirrors that posers use to appear tougher and more valuable than they actually are, while the real fighters step up.
And militaries always had this divide between administrative and fighting forces, the latter ones giving the former unearned credibility. Especially the posers among them. You are seeing it now. Take it as a lesson and judge people by their walk, not their talk.
The military is a big place. It is full of amazing people but also full of absolute shit bags. For every 5 legit buddies I had, there were probably 50 that were shit bags. Don't get me wrong - They could usually do their jobs but outside of that bare minimum standard were terrible, unreliable, unpredictable human beings.
Not sure what your sample size is looking like, but your odds of landing on a shit bag former military person is high. There is also a high degree of people who 1.) Lie about their service for prestige or 2.) Pretend they did something in the military that they did not to create an impression (IE, a truck driver or a mechanic trying to pretend they were combat arms).
I don't really have an answer. Maybe it appeals to a certain personality type, maybe it's just where a lot of losers end up who have no other options. Maybe it's just how people operate when they are selfish, and let's face it, a majority of people are selfish.
I was just as greatly surprised by the number of willful asshats during my time in service as you are by the actions of those claiming to have served on the civilian side of things.
I think the real answer is just that there are many shitty people in the world, regardless of what path they have walked (or grifted by on) in life. This displays itself across all professions, social classes, age groups, regional groups, etc. with some outliers of course.
as a business owner i thought doing business with the military members would be nice, I hopped on that discount for military train that was so popular etc... turns out they were the worst to deal with, so many of them skipped out on their bills, in fact they were the only ones that pulled that on me. Since when? Prior service Infantry, OIF Veteran. Air support was a luxury - Sometimes we got coverage for the first 30mins or hour (recon flyover, etc.) of a mission and then were on our own after that. Half the time didn't even have a QRF (or if we did, response time was 6+ hours). Definitely still did our jobs 200% regardless of support level.
That said, as many will tell you, hearing that rotor noise inbound and seeing the fury of God unleashed on some heathens is a very comforting (and rapturous) thing.

The amount of companies that claim to be "Veteran Owned" and try to portray themselves as "hard" is ridiculous - It's just a sales tactic in most cases (although there are legit companies as well and I support them/buy their merchandise). Just have to do your homework.

I'd not say they are the best pillows money can buy, but they are definitely better that your normal cotton stuffed pillow.
They don't get lumpy and can always be fluffed back to the state they came in. So they will last for ages.
They are of middling firmness. Not hard and definitely not feather soft.
I've seen better pillows, but they are usually specialty pillows with layers of different materials.
