I remember when I was a kid, you could hardly fit our family into one area to eat. People crossed the country to come and eat at Grandpas table, with everything from stuffing, turkey, biscuits, rolls, green been casserole and cranberry relish available in plenty.
The kids always played in the backyard and basement until it was time to start setting it up for the feast. Conversations would fly around and you could hear laughing and merrymaking with the occasional "discussion". As a kid, wandering through the different cacophony of conversations, it didn't seem like much at the time, probably because you were a kid and didn't understand anything lol. But the sense of wonder and magic is just something I cannot replicate in my older age. It's definitely something I wasn't able to appreciate at the time.
There were just lots of people with lots of love. We had people from four generations of our family under one roof and everything was awesome: from playing with my cousins to trying to catch a puff from my uncles cigar.
Now it's 2020 and everyone hates each other. So thanks, Democrats. You've completely fouled my favorite holiday, the one I have the most fond memories of and actually take off work for. My family members excuses have to work overtime to cover the fact that our family has become wholly divided.
Half my family hates the other because of your propaganda and demonization. All because your party is filled with petulant children who don't have any respect for themselves or enough decency to admit when they're wrong.

well my family is gone(older pede) but the thanksgiving the op describe years ago was much like my experience - heading to grandparents house out in the country, getting my .22 rifle and ammo set and ready, dad bringing a new pistol he bought he wants to try out. Iam almost 60 years old. My parents got the chi-com flu, My sister's family got it. This was 6 weeks ago. They are all doing just fine.
I got a phone call from my Father and Mother just yesterday expressing concern about me coming up to celebrate Thanksgiving.
It was a somber discussion as I do have some health issues. This is what I told my Father and Mother:
Dad and Mom, I love you and the rest of the family deeply. However, I refuse to live my life locked in a cage and letting things like this dictate how I live my life. I am coming up for Thanksgiving to celebrate with everyone. If I decided to not come up for the holiday then where does it stop? What about Christmas? How about the New Year?
If I get sick then there is no reason not to believe that I will recover as everyone else has. I will get over it. Also, I refuse to wear a mask. They do not help. They are just an emotional blanket for the uninformed.
I want to wish everyone here a Happy Thanksgiving.

We don’t believe in COVID at all at my house. Kids friends have all had it . No big deal. My Nurse Friend described it as a cold on steroids and we now how to treat it now.

That was a beautiful write up. My family was like yours. My Uncle Jimmy was always watching old western movies. My Uncle Bob always helped my Mom with cooking, I specifically remember him peeling the potatoes. There were Aunts and Uncles and cousins everywhere, the entire kitchen was packed with people. My favorite part was my cousin Chris and Sarah, same age as me, coming over. We'd be running around playing games in the basement, or playing super nintendo upstairs, asking my Mom over and over WHEN WILL DINNER BE DONE.

Don't sweat it. I made a post the other night about my messed up situation. Last year I spent thanksgiving with girl I was kinda seeing in prison. It was a thanksgiving prison visit. Well she got released and instantly treated me like shit so there's that. Lol no regrets but at the same time, even if I spend this thanksgiving alone, I'm glad I'm not doing that again.
Come to think of it, my memories of Thanksgiving were good but if I look at it through an adult lens: The men mostly drank or smoked pot or both, the kids had fun because we were innocent and the women mostly bickered and prepared the food. So the men dealt with the differences and stress through substance abuse which I don't think is good. Take away the drugs and the innocence of childhood and all you're left with is the bickering lol no thanks.

My immediate family and parents decided to visit our grandfather for Thanksgiving. He’s in his 90s and in hospice, but he’s up and about, not like bed ridden. His other adult children (they’re in their 70s) gave us so much shit about this. But they see him all the time, we live much further away.

On the big holidays, i always do a 8-10 mile hike on very lightly travelled rustic trails. Preferably solo, but maybe my wife and/or my kids if their willing. Then all i gotta do is gorge and nap. Makes for a good day.

thanksgiving was always my mom's holiday - almost every year for the last 40 years we have had thanksgiving at my parents' house - i guess it is fitting that they sold the house a few weeks ago. But yeah, it is going to be weird to not have my cousins and everyone not here. Even weirder is going to be Christmas Eve which we have always had at my aunt's house. I think it is awesome that these traditions have survived my steady march into and through adulthood and that my kids celebrate with the same family members I did as a kid. This year definitely sucks. Also, as a NY based family it is nice to see my cousins who are pretty much all based - its the only time a year when we get together - will have to fight extra hard to make sure this year doesn't end that chapter.
Same with my family and they are all christian conservatives. I can't believe they are afraid of a cold with a 99%+ survival rate. I have always loved America with all my heart but I am seriously disappointed in my country. Back in feb my Indian (dot) friend told me what was going on over there with all the restrictions and my response was "that would never fly over here". Oh boy was I wrong...
We got together anyways because fuck the goverment.
I live far away from family and have had some quiet holidays over the years. Instead of eating leftovers look around at restaurants to see if they're hosting any good events. There are some real gems out there serving up holiday food. It's worth it to get out of the house.

I have my immediate family over on thanksgiving, and since other family/friends who aren't total dopes go to their inlaws, I host a friendsgiving in december or january to get everyone together since November is always too busy. Plan another date to get everyone in the same room! At least the good ones :P
