He's become beloved here because he threw communists of helicopters during his dictatorship, which earns the good graces of many ignorant fools that think nothing more of the santicty of human life beyond "lynch communists good make them scream and go splat".
I also wish to see communism eradicated, it is truly evil. But it is unwise to glorify stooping to their evil level to combat them, or praise those who succumbed to that base instinct.
No communist should exist, and on that note may the bastard Nicolae Ceaușescu forever burn in the fires of hell. But what Pinochet did was animalistic to the point of disgust, there IS a limit to how you deal with evil people if you still want to remain on the side of good.
I can not say that strongly enough. If someone argues that torture is necessary under ANY circumstances, you have abandoned your morality, your civility, and God.
