B) is overwatch a legitimate term for what you were doing? First time I ever heard it was the game, so I'm honestly asking if it's a "proper" (or even slang) military word. Thanks in advance for helping with my etymology lesson!
Yes Overwatch has been the official term the Military has used since developing new tactics including what are now called Force Protection Tactics after WW2 ,so in use since the 50's .
It can refer to anything from being in a strategic high point or position allowing the wide observance of surrounding terrain & more importantly likely enemy positions to provide effective & immediate covering fire to units operating in the area you are covering . So it can cover everything from a Spotter & DM to a tank etc taking that position ie Overwatching while routes are cleared etc .
Our Motto was "Bringing Terror To The Terrorists", l really enjoyed my time as Designated Marksman as you were actively hunting the enemy at all times & l was really lucky to get out with no real combat related problems apart from the SNAFU Knees, Back & Hips from humping stupid loads all over the mountains in Afghanistan on patrol.
But the one trouble l do have is we would spend extended times providing Overwatch at night, up a mountain watching bad guy compounds etc we were going to hit the next day & the silence of night would be broken by the screams of Kids & woman being abused or locals they were torturing etc.I now awake sometimes with a jump thinking l heard them again & can not handle woman or kids crying or in particular screaming like kids do in malls etc,l am happy avoiding them now all together ,which has the benefit of not being subjected to the wife dragging me along for shopping .
So my time as a Designated Marksman on Overwatch brought a lot of good memories & bad -
Here is another version of Overwatch in the Taliban Badlands on the Pakistan border , just before l got out Home For Xmas .
In reality you are , as you are a young person who understands but more importantly supports the President in his fight to MAGA.
I am old enough now to have got myself financially sound running business's l love & with a life style l dreamed of ,my wife & l are basically set .I now want nothing more than for the young people like you of America, to grow old prospering in a extended booming economy & not have the constant Wars & terrorist attack l grew up with.
The greatest thanks any of the younger generation can give to us who fought in wars is go & live your best life & make a positive contribution to your community & the country .
Aww shucks. But I know what you mean. I have lived enough for two life times, good and bad. Now my only desire is to provide my three babies with an environment that will allow them to become the best versions of themselves.
