And that’s what he got charged with, lying to a Fed and interfering with their investigation.
Even though the Feds know that that investigation was spurious and unconstitutional because he literally broke no laws so they had absolutely no reason to interrogate him.

I’m not a lawyer so there may be more nuance there, to be fair. But that’s the gist of it as far as I remember anyway.
