I got a Remington 870 for $300-ish, but that was several years ago before the shortage. They should always be priced lower than a rifle even in markets like what we're in right now.
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 would be your best bet. Very high performance and affordable. Benellis are pretty good, but very expensive.
As far as I know, yes. But take that with a grain of salt as I’m not a hunter and not really up to speed with hunting laws. I’d personally be opposed to any shotgun I can’t shoulder fire just because of aiming and stability. But they do look intimidating, no doubt (if you’re trying to just scare someone).
I just went to check out Gunbroker and nearly shit my pants at what new shotguns are going for. Hopefully things return to normal soon. It might not hurt to pick up a used Remington or Mossberg to hold you over in the short term if your needs are urgent. The shorties seem to be commanding a premium for God only knows why.
The Lucky Gunner channel on the YouTube has a pretty good series on shotguns and shorties. That might be worth checking out before buying anything.
The fun game is to find one. Put off getting a mossberg 590 a1 and now I can't find one for sale. You can build your AR for little cheaper. Atleast I did at the height of Obama fucking around with everything
The 40 is a thunder I wish I could post a pic here I might share a link to a video of my first time shooting it. It’s about year old. I just shot it about a week ago. It’ll put an exit hole in someone the size of a tennis ball.
My wife’s father is a dealer and he said it’s one of his favorites for conceal. Accuracy isn’t too bad at about 40 feet I had a decent grouping but it’s also my first time shooting it.
Home defense against 1-3 idiots a shotgun is best.
3+ ar15 with PDX hollow points loaded up is best.
Also claymores but those are optional.
Shotty. Trying to find another myself.

I've just been looking online for the shotty. Not really that many sun stores around me
If its first shotgun, get a pump. Lots of people love semi auto shotguns, but a pump is more reliable.
I really like my bersa 40 subCom. Got my wife a 380 she loves it. Nice Firearms and lifetime warranties.
