In the interest of reducing Amazon's stranglehold on not only shopping convenience, but also searchable selections - I'm in the market for an economical 2-1 windows based laptop (I'll convert it to Linux). Where should a pede search for electronic selections and, even more so, whom should they purchase from?

If you must buy online, then try to purchase directly from the company, that makes the product you want, instead of buying through amaz_on. You can purchase many books and videos directly from publisher's websites. For example, I buy books from Ignatius Press, Tan Books, Sophia Institute, Tumblar House, etc. Many authors also offer their books for sale through their websites. Make sure you check those out, too. Also, try used book outlets that have online stores (after checking out your local stores). Hope this helps.

The best option is to probably just go through each of the typical computer brand names' websites, then see if you can find what you want on eBay. That's what I did and it costs me half the price.

What is your definition of economical?

So, let's just say reasonable. I understand that most of Amazon and Wal-Mart are pushing made in China goods and you get what you pay for. But currently, most all electronics are manufactured overseas. So I'm just looking for up and coming alternatives that can be readily searched for current products on the market, and purchased within reason without padding Amazon's wallet more than necessary.

Unfortunately, unless you're buying from a distributor, even in Raleigh, NC there's only Intrex (which I purchase from whenever possible) but they keep a limited supply overall on hand themselves unfortunately. What of Newegg and Tiger direct - are they still viable/decent options?
