Wow. Did he ever bring back some horror stories. So, believe me when I say this:

Okay, letsee. This was a while ago, so memory is a bit foggy.
First off, nobody over there wanted to take charge of anything and actually help him fix the problem at the factory. Everybody just kept their heads down, refused to offer any advice or solutions of their own, and immediately agreed with whatever their department bosses said. This might have been part of chinese culture, or maybe just at that one company. Dunno for sure. Frankly, I see that in the United States every once in a while. But his testimony was that it was constant and pervasive, and he ended up doing most of the work to fix things.
Second, drivers over there suck. If you're a pedestrian, you take your life in your hands every time you step out your front door; chinese drivers will mow pedestrians down without even thinking about it. When there is an accident, most folks over there don't know first aid and can't do anything to help other than call the ambulance. (and sometimes they will avoid helping for fear of getting sued or something)
Third, the food was rather frightening. Bits of bone where there aren't supposed to be bones. Foods of questionable freshness. Once or twice he found bits of what looked like broken glass or plastic. A few times while he was there, he got violently sick shortly after eating. Likely food poisoning, can't be sure.
Far as he knew, he never got accosted by government agents or anything--though I suppose they might have been spying on him without his knowledge. The reason the above things scare me is, they're EVERYDAY things. Things nobody should have to deal with in daily life. But over there it IS daily. /shudder

I also read a story just the other day about a British diplomat who rescued a drowning Chinese woman in some sort of small pond, none of the other Chinese people around him helped in anyway. They were just watching her drown. That's one messed up culture.
As a foreigner, you have to register where you are staying with the local police every day you are in the country. If you are in a hotel that lets foreigners stay, they will do the registering for you. Otherwise, you have to do it yourself.
The police routinely show up at your door at 2 to 4 a.m. to conduct surprise inspections and interviews with you.
You will be ripped off, potentially beaten, or assaulted by "friends" and there is no legal recourse. You own nothing and everything you "have" can be taken either by an official from the government or someone who has "connections". There is no justice system like we have here and it does not run by the rules we have been using since the Magna Carta was signed lo so many years ago.
As a foreigner, you will be kicked out of buildings or denied permits to operate a business because you are a foreigner.
It is a fucking shit show. And this is just the day to day of it. Not even getting into the quality of life and safety concerns that occur any time you step outside the foreigner heavy neighborhoods and areas of a city in China.
