Honestly if you want maximally humane and basically foolproof, just gas em with nitrogen or nitrous. Sensation of asphyxiation is based on CO2 concentration, not low oxygen, they'll just pass out.
But on the other hand, it's not a particularly honorable death, it's not far off from how lab mice are humanely dispatched after their utility ends. Some criminals should at least get the choice of the more honorable firing squad end.
