Contextyankee is correct. It's like in a pdf file you try to convert a picture into text and sometimes it doesn't understand it all. Scanners are practically taking pictures of the paper. OCR is pretty cool because it converts the words in a picture into highlight able text.

The brief is created electronically, and if the court requires it to be submitted electronically it is saved in the format the court requires. There is no fucking way in gods green earth the brief was printed then re-scanned in order to digitize it.
I was just trying to explain what OCR is. But you could be right too. I am not sure why they would scan it. Actually when OCR makes mistakes it gives you a [] square symbol for mistranslated letters instead of complete misspellings.
