There are multiple computer security exploits with pdf files. So for once, they are actually correct to warn people about clicking direct links to pdf files. I know we all trust Sydney, but everyone here should be very weary of clicking direct links to pdf files in general. It's potentially not safe.
Here is a quick 5 second search of "pdf zero day" vulnerabilities.
Exploit detection service EdgeSpot, the company that found the files, says the PDF documents would contact a remote domain with information on the users' device --such as IP address, OS version, Chrome version, and the path of the PDF file on the user's computer.

I think you get the point. While these are disclosed and patched vulnerabilities people find new ones all the time, and actual nefarious hackers wouldn't be letting Adobe know they found a new exploit. IIRC there have been exploits that allow malicious pdf files to run code and programs (without notifying the user) on your PC just by the act of opening a pdf file.
