Roberts wants the court to abstain from this election and essentially any government dispute.
So Roberts has been trying to establish a doctrine of only intervening when it's politically convenient.
He is really really afraid that if the rest of the court doesn't adopt a "hands off" approach to constitutional protections, that the election will end up in their lap.
Roberts just wants to go to his parties in DC and schmooze with the heads of European countries. He doesn't particularly like this whole adjudication of constitutional disputes business.

On November 20, he reorganized all the circuit courts and put the 4 most conservative justices in charge of every swing state. This can't be a coincidence. To me this is way bigger than a meaningless decision yesterday. I think we still have a chance with him.
