I think your guy and his work friends get emotionally involved in Trump's win. When it doesn't look good, the shift to full doomer is an emotional defense mechanism. They build those negative expectations in advance to protect themselves so when things turn out badly, they are seeing the expected negative outcome. The alternative is disappointment and they would rather not be disappointed.

Some folks try to manifest in reverse. DH is all-in for Trump, yet he bet his gun-nut friends $100 that come January, Biden will be president. I told him I'd take that bet and made him shake on it. He said, "Come Inauguration, if you win, I'll be throwing hundred-dollar bills at you!"
