Well the second part of your statement I completely agree with. I'm for legal immigration with a solid expectation, not a "pathway," to integration.
I want to point out that the melting part of the phrase melting pot isn't about melting ice. It's more like melting different metals into a new metal. To me that specifically means a culture based on the best of Western values first and foremost, and the best of other cultures get to come along for the blend. The thing is, the "best of other cultures" from my point of view tend to already be shared values anyway. Hard work ethic, willingness to achieve, desire to help others one-on-one instead of desire to prop up a socialist mentality.
