The difference goes into what do you do with that knowledge. We are to confess our sins, and ask for forgiveness. We are granted that opportunity by God, which is the gift.
Ephesians 2:8 & 9 "8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast."
We cannot be saved by works. The saving is the gift. Christians take the proactive steps by knowing, and then acknowledging the sovereignty of Jesus, and then asking for forgiveness, which is to say, asking for the gift that is available to those that will acknowledge Jesus as the Son of God.

We can be damned by works, can we not?
without repenting, yes.
And how do we do that?
asking for forgiveness and turning from sin
