Usenet was once only accessible to universities, and so every September, they had a flood of new users who didn't know how to use the platform, including its culture, idiosyncrasies, and etiquette. So whenever September rolled around, they had to rein in the new userbase and acclimate them to the network.
However, in September of 1993, AOL enabled its customer base to access Usenet and overwhelmed the entire platform and all of its users, and the culture of the service was lost forever. Hence, it was known as the Eternal September.
As an Internet historian, are you aware of any archive of Usenet other than Dejanews that Google bought and turned into Google Groups? I don’t trust Google at all to preserve the true history of the Internet.
