In this sense it would affect content hosts. But the reason I have a NL vpn is that it is installed on my seedbox :)
I assume because of NL laws with these regards, they will have better datacenter infrastructure of the sort that caters to the type of crowd that wants cheap privacy but dont really care about uptime guarantees. The sort of datacenter that is filled with $20/month torrent box virtual machines on 10gbps uncapped internet, rather than the sort of datacentre that has 99.999% uptime SLA's and pay per gigabyte data.
If your vpn server crashes, it just falls out of the pool and you connect to a new one. It could be down for a month and nobody would be any wiser. If your ecommerce site or game server crashes, you lose money.
That's my take on why vpn's tend to have lots of nodes in the netherlands. I'm probably completely wrong.

I avoid any discussion about politics with my Dutch family and friends. Although I've spent a lot of time in Holland over the last 35 years, I don't go there or spend as much time there as you.
I mean you can also say most if not all mainstream media here is anti trump too.

Most free proxies/VPNs are based in NL. Dunno why. But it's basically proxy traffic
But IP/ Geographical location is based off of the location set by the user, not where the servers are stored. I've never used a free service so I'm asking, do the free services all route Netherlands as their only geographic location to choose from?

There are like a thousand different locations offered for geographical location all over the world by VPN services. Mine offers several dozen and is based in Sweden. Are you stating that 10s of thousands of people are randomly choosing Netherlands as the geographic location they want their IP address routed through? I've used several vpn services over the last decade and I've never seen one that only allows for a single geographical location.
Ours offers tons of locals, but some are faster than others and Netherlands is just a go-to. A bunch of pirating sites based there, too.
Weird. Being here in the states, when I first began using a VPN I used Sweden as my location and quickly learned to use a location closest to my own for faster speed. Always just assumed everyone used a global location closest to their own to ensure fastest upload/ download and web speed possible.
It also has to do with laws. There's a legality reason why pirating sites and troll farms use certain locations
