Yeah, ARs have it beat in that category, especially if your hoofing it for more than a couple of days, but the I find the extra weight helps tame recoil, and added power that can turn cover to concealment is the trade off. So I treat the extra weight as something of physical conditioning issue, and try to save weight in other areas of equipment.
That’s an excellent way to look at it. I’ve done a couple thru hikes and I’m just super anal about weight everywhere I can find. Always trying to shave it down. I think a lot of people could just compensate and be fine. I love the gun. They’re every bit as reliable as an AK. Eats steel case. Actually pretty dadgum accurate. The best of all the battle rifles, in my opinion.
