Yeah, ARs have it beat in that category, especially if your hoofing it for more than a couple of days, but the I find the extra weight helps tame recoil, and added power that can turn cover to concealment is the trade off. So I treat the extra weight as something of physical conditioning issue, and try to save weight in other areas of equipment.
That’s an excellent way to look at it. I’ve done a couple thru hikes and I’m just super anal about weight everywhere I can find. Always trying to shave it down. I think a lot of people could just compensate and be fine. I love the gun. They’re every bit as reliable as an AK. Eats steel case. Actually pretty dadgum accurate. The best of all the battle rifles, in my opinion.
Well, I look at it all as series of trade-offs, weight of the rifle and ammo, reliability, performance and ease of repair, and how I think I'm gonna use it and cost. If money (and homemade repairs) was no object, SCAR 17.
But in scenarios I can come up with, I'd 9/10 likely grab an AR-15 pattern instead, I find it more versatile for the weight, but if its a scenario where 7.62 NATO could be an advantage, I like to have the option.
G3 clone, PTR-91
While I love mine, I must say they’re awfully heavy. I wouldn’t wanna haul it up a mountain.
