Most acute facilities I work with are not even actively testing for influenza. Most facilities are being told to run a COVID-19 PRC test instead if a person comes in with a upper respiratory illness or fever.
Number of cases are down because they don't seem to be testing for influenza and opting for COVID-19 instead. Given the lack of reliability of the PCR test in general I would not be surprised if influenza cases are being misclassified as COVID-19.
