This idea was hammered into me when I was still in high school. No mention of trade schools or anything else. They wanted us all to go to a leftist indoctrination center.

In the mid-90s when I told my middle school guidance counselor I wasn't interested in college and wanted to pursue technology she was floored, tried to convince me but didn't happen, I did go to a trade school for 6 months to learn more Network and Server administration then I entered the field and also 20 years later I am still here.
