Is that the folgertech printer?

149
BlinkinSun [S] 149 points ago +150 / -1

It’s a folgertech FT-6. I was one of the first buyers and was the one who figured out and solved the “random fried control board” issue, and loaded thingiverse with upgrades to replace all of the shitty parts that come in the kit. I also put out the first available 32-bit software. Turned a garbage pile into an amazing machine.

Awesome! What did you use for the 32bit board? Bigtreetech?

20
BlinkinSun [S] 20 points ago +20 / -0

Yup! I was an EARLY user of the SKR board when their universal Marlin build was a dumpster fire. I had to start from scratch.

9
Oprah_Windbag 9 points ago +9 / -0

Nice. I have the SKR board in my custom Hypercube.

2
sgtnoodle 2 points ago +2 / -0

Have you ever tried Klipper? It works great with high step rates even on 8-bit controllers, on account of all the kinemetics running on a raspberry pi or whatever. Editing a config file and restarting a process rather than mutating EEPROM is also quite convenient.

2
BlinkinSun [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

I used klipper when I was running an 8bit controller. It was very smooth. I do like Marlin w/ octoprint on the 32-bit board better because it’s more user-friendly and packed with features.

$700 for the base machine. I have about $1200 total into it and about 2mo of design work into the 3D printed upgrades (all designs available for free on my thingiverse now).

So uhh. You 3d print anything.. uhh... cool

14
BlinkinSun [S] 14 points ago +14 / -0

I primarily 3D print to prototype cool stuff for machining and 3D print wax for investment casting in aluminum. If you’re asking if I have ever made any toys... yes... plenty of yo-yos and spinning tops. 🙄

8
LawfulSilentMajority 8 points ago +8 / -0

The trade-off is the extra work and troubleshooting you need to do to get it working right. They're more like 90% of the way there diy kits with some cheap parts you'll probably want to upgrade.

27
heightnoise 27 points ago +28 / -1

Make sure you have the Liberator pistol files downloaded my man!

34
BlinkinSun [S] 34 points ago +34 / -0

I downloaded that a long time ago and designed some of my own. I use this printer for prototyping and for printing wax for aluminum investment casting. I have built CNC machines as well so the possibilities are endless.

12
Johnfox13 12 points ago +12 / -0

Ooooo. If you make any, you should post some aluminum cast rifles or pistols.

Or even make custom Trump things. That is super cool

New Star Wars trilogy desktop wallpaper? Gross.

Love everything else though!

11
BlinkinSun [S] 11 points ago +13 / -2

Ready for your head to explode?.... I believe The Last Jedi to be the best movie of the entire series.

We all have different emotional attachments. I have as a 14yo boy(reeee) in a hospital bed for a month and a half after a horrific accident. A more fortunate childhood friend brought his N64 to the hospital for me to entertain myself with. I got hooked on the pod racing game.... played it nonstop for a month and it got me through an otherwise hard time. I got hooked on Star Wars from that point on and had a special attachment to 1-3. When the new ones came out, I was going through the toughest bit of depression of my life. I bought 20 tickets to the premier of Force Awakens and gave them to all of my friends. It was the first time in years that I was able to shut out the challenges of my life and submerge myself in fantasy. I had never experienced such emotion in the theaters.. heart racing, tears running down my face... whole nine yards. I continued the tradition through every new Star Wars film. Just before TLJ, I had finally taken responsibility and decided to turn my life around. It was a scary time. I changed everything. Star Wars was familiar and consistent. I went into the theater wanting them to write the story and with zero expectations and was blown away. When Snoke was killed, I gasped in a movie for the first time ever. When the rebellion ship went to warp speed through the fleet of First order ships and there was silence before the loud boom, my eyes were wide open and my jaw was hanging to my chest.... meme material.

But that’s me and my experience. There is no such thing as a wrong opinion as they’re completely subjective.

6
MaxLevel0 6 points ago +6 / -0

Super glad you enjoyed the series.

For me, it was the opposite. I had an attachment to the original trilogy (Which I saw as a teen just before the prequels came out) like that. The Prequels felt like honest fanfiction that I never needed- but was a ton of fun to watch.

The new movies felt like... well I'm sure you've heard people's impassioned speeches on it before. It's been years and I still struggle to not get angry at what they did to Luke.

What do you think of the Mandalorian? I'm watching it slowly with my Nephew (who is the perfect age for it) and loving every minute.

3
BlinkinSun [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

I have only watched the first season and enjoyed it. It felt more like the original trilogy with better special effects. My only complaint is that the pace was a little slow.

2
MaxLevel0 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yes, it was slow. It felt like the pacing of an old western more than the pacing of a movie. Good for the small screen.

1
Ghostof_PatrickHenry 1 point ago +1 / -0

It’s a true old western samurai story, turned space opera, which is what the original movie was based on. (Lucas was largely inspired by Japanese samurai films when writing the first movie.)

The Mandalorian character allows for the original film’s genre to be fully flushed out, in the most literal sense. You can see Clint Eastwood in just about every action the character makes. And in the most recent episode, where they first introduce a Jedi character to the series, everything from the Japanese architecture to the villain to the music and the cinematography is pulled directly from old samurai films. You feel like you’re watching a samurai film. (Compared to the first episode of the second season, which felt like a spaghetti western.)

It’s a brilliant show, and what allows it to be brilliant is the fact that the show-runners completely ignore SJW popular culture and the expectations that come with it.

3
HateEngine 3 points ago +3 / -0

Yeah the prequel trilogy was ok. Where it really shined was all the spin offs, like clone wars, etc.

The first few episodes of the Mandalorian felt like fan fiction but i think they've turned it around quickly. At least the people involved seem to respect what came before them.

3
1Jungle77Dan6 3 points ago +3 / -0

respect

2
HateEngine 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thats cool you had such a great experience with the new trilogy and you took my teasing so well.

For me, the Force Awakens was just the beginning of a squandered opportunity to tell more of the Star Wars story. Instead, they threw out all the expanded universe and basically did a reboot of A New Hope. And then, not having continuity for the story arc with Rian Johnson and Abrams was another waste. And all the SJW shit piled on top of it.

1
PensivePatriot 1 point ago +1 / -0

You went from coolest dude on this site to whatever the literal opposite of that is.

TLJ singlehandedly killed Star Wars. Full stop.

1
BlinkinSun [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

Believe me, I do get where you’re coming from.... people spent their childhoods worshipping Luke Skywalker. They invested much of their lives building the world and collecting the stories of the extended universe. TLJ was probably like a stab in the gut to somebody like you. Luke becoming a bitter old man who had sworn off use of the force while having such high expectations would probably be like GEOTUS conceding on election night for me.... but I didn’t have that attachment to Luke. I didn’t know in my heart what his story was supposed to be and thus I wasn’t shattered when it was written differently. IMO, the only “eh” movies in the new star wars world were rise of skywalker and solo. Ghats not to say that each movie didn’t have bad filler scenes or useless characters.... just that I personally found TLJ and FA to be great movies as a whole but not the others.

One thing we can probably all agree on is that Rogue One was incredible. I believe that the reason that this is true is because the writers and director had freedom to make the story what they wanted without having to fit it into any existing material or characters besides for the events of the very end. Likewise, I think this is why solo wasn’t very good. There was very little solo back-story which they could create without it completely making no sense with what we know of him in the other movies.

PensivePatriot 1 point ago +1 / -0

I understand and agree with everything you’ve just said, you’re all good in my book man!

8

8
AWeekendAtBidens 8 points ago +8 / -0

It's a hero story they've heard as a child. Boys are hard wired to remember these things and still hold them in esteem as a man.

It's good for them of they don't allow some hollywood rats to taint and ruin this part of their childhood for them.

That actor was a marine IRL, apparently a decent person from what I remember.

3
Sixty2ndAssassin 3 points ago +3 / -0

Adam Driver was a marine?

6
KickingPugilist 6 points ago +6 / -0

Yup, from his wiki:

Shortly after the September 11 attacks, Driver enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He was assigned to Weapons Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Marines as an 81mm mortar man. He served for two years and eight months before fracturing his sternum while mountain biking, right before his unit got shipped to Iraq.

He didn't get to deploy fortunately or unfortunately, but he did enlist.

Edit:. Also from this vet website

Driver adapted to Marine Corps culture. ... But Driver injured his sternum in a mountain biking accident before deploying. He attempted to overcome his debilitated state by training harder than before, but after two years of service with no time in the field, he was medically discharged.

19

I have 8 at work. Not an exaggeration. I just really really hate minimizing windows. If it's still up on one of my screens, i know it's something that still needs my attention. Although realistically it's extremely rare that u have more than 6 being used at a time. Displayfusion software helps a lot with managing this mess. Can I do the same thing just minimizing everything? Nope, if it's minimized, it's done. How else would I tell them apart?

Yes I'm one of those people that chokes on 64gb of RAM.

True, but it's worth the convenience of not having to switch stuff around all the time. I frequently switch between each monitor and it's so easy to just move the cursor to the screen

6
80960KA 6 points ago +6 / -0

I used to run 3 but went down to 2 when I got a 4k class main monitor, just found I didn't really use the 3rd one enough to keep it around.

I've found 2 to be perfect. Main monitor gets probably 90% of the attention, but aux monitor is handy for throwing up reference material on when I have something maximized on main.

2
KickingPugilist 2 points ago +2 / -0

Also good for when you're day trading stocks and keeping up with markets.

3
MaxLevel0 3 points ago +3 / -0

It's good for research and stuff like that. I'll commonly have (on my three screens) four+ reference materials up at once and my main screen with what I'm writing.

But what you say about multitasking is 100% correct. I have to be very careful about what I leave open (thedonald.win is the worst offender) in another screen or I'll lose a ton of time when I don't mean to.

I run a lot of different pieces of software simultaneously for my engineering and prototyping work. Dragging and dropping elements of a build is much easier with more real estate available, as is multitasking. My other setup for working from home (day job) has three monitors for the same reason and I always feel like I need more for that.

4

Same, I usually have Photoshop up in one, and my sign program in another. Or a browser looking for answers when I get stuck in Photoshop. Or YouTube to listen to Bannon.

Any 3d printers for us pedes that want to get started but have no idea and don't trust amazon or reddit suggestions?

8
BlinkinSun [S] 8 points ago +8 / -0

Ender 3 pro... I will never stop recommending this to people. I have one which I use for small pieces and it’s fantastic. The only way to make it better is to go to linear rails. This will greatly help with layer lines if you have any.

2
PensivePatriot 2 points ago +2 / -0

My Ender3 stopped extruding properly in less than a month. Hard pass.

1
BlinkinSun [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

That happened to a lot of people because they ran extrusion temps too high with too much retraction and clogged beyond the heat break in the extruder. After that, nozzle pressure is excessive and you get oozing and bad prints. Fix this and it’s a great printer. This is the most commonly recommended cheap printer on the planet for a really good reason. I have had mine completely original for two years and have replaced nothing but occasional nozzles.

2
ZincOS 2 points ago +2 / -0

Isn't that just a knockoff of the prusa?

2
MaxLevel0 2 points ago +2 / -0

Both are based on the open source RepRap machines.

https://reprap.org/wiki/Prusa_Mendel_(iteration_1)

The Prusa Mendel is iteration 1 of the Prusa machines. The i3 is what we have today.

You see the i3 Mk3+ announcement? I kinda want to try out the SuperPINDA but they say it really isn't necessary if you already have a working machine.

1
ZincOS 1 point ago +1 / -0

I hadn't

I'm looking at it right now.

They got rid of some more zip ties. That was always something dumb, having zip ties on your axes.

I might just buy the SuperPinda anyways.

1
ZincOS 1 point ago +1 / -0

They also made a new printbed sheet.

4
MaxLevel0 4 points ago +4 / -0

The Prusa is the best pick for a reliable printer that takes almost no maintenance and is an absolute workhorse. Get the Mini for a 7" cubic space for $400 or the i3 mk3 for a 10" workspace.

But for as low as $200 you can go with a lot of the i3 clones that work well enough. They just take more maintenance. My first printer was the Wanhao Duplicator (it goes by a dozen names). It still works and is my prototyping machine when I need to check for fit before printing the final product on my Prusa.

I have printed some absolutely massive stuff... some of which was so big that it had to be broken down into four prints. It’s nice to have!

2
stonepony 2 points ago +2 / -0

What's the build volume?

Have been thinking about getting in to it, because I enjoy 3D design and have some ideas for concrete casting.

2
BlinkinSun [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

BV is 720mm x 350mm x 400mm. I designed a better Y axis mount which adds rigidit and gives another 10mm of usable volume to Z. I use my machine for aluminum casting. Concrete would work well.

2
stonepony 2 points ago +2 / -0

Is that width, depth, height? 720mm is like, 2 feet in freedom units?

I want to do some silicone/fiberglass mother molds.

Make some Walking Dead garden gnomes vs zombie garden gnomes. Maybe some humongous outdoor chess sets.

1

I gotta ask, what's the coolest thing you've printed?

Last year around Christmas, I designed and printed an LED photography soft box for my wife. I printed the shell and front frame and used stainless hardware to mount the frame over nylon. I built an aluminum heat sink to go inside with all of the LED and incorporated a cooling system into the shell. It looks cool as hell.

Damn that's a pretty machine! I'm a designer and printer myself. My lab uses Taz 5 and 6, makerbot Z-18s, a German reprap (garbage), UPBox+. Happy printing fren!
