His staff will cobble them together after he's gone, using notes, rough drafts and the TV show to "finish" them. Sadly, it's common in the industry now, for books to be "discovered" after an author's death, as their estate cashes in. Crichton, Gary Jennings and other have had books come out posthumously that are more staff/ghost authors than the author.

I remember reading that he'd said he loses interest when he knows the ending. I suspect that's what happened here. He's put more effort into prequels and other projects than the books that made him rich and famous.

Those last books were finished by Brandon Sanderson, and were fairly bittersweet for me. On one hand, I glad the series got wrapped up after Jordan's death. On the other hand, it's painful listening to Sanderson's obnoxious fanclub trash Jordan for the previous couple admittedly sub-par books (by Jordan's standards), while praising Sanderson for turning the series around. In reality, the story was already back on track by the end of the last book that Jordan published, and Sanderson criminally misunderstood and miswrote major characters. Fortunately Jordan seems to have written most of the really important scenes.
