I never hated hoard players. That just sounds like you played on a pvp server. Most MMO's don't have the right systems in place to keep gankers in check. You need to have a system in place where if people keep killing other players the guards attack them on sight. There should be consequences for random acts of violence.
They kept killing you due to a lack of game mechanics more then anything. I won't play a pvp server unless the game itself takes human nature into account.

Yep, it was a PvP server in WoW Vanilla the first time around.
That perpetual sense of danger, however, is kinda what made it fun (if that makes sense). That is, after you had a stealth class....
