That would be a huge gamble on their part. It would very likely be discovered in a forensic audit of the machines (very likely = essentially impossible that it not be discovered) and when it is they're in even deeper shit.

In many cases the cover up is worse than the crime... Although in this case the crime is about as bad as one could imagine.

If I were them I would plead ignorance and blame (foreign) hackers or some low level nerd "acting alone." Or flee to a non extradition country... Since the penalty for treason is potentially death they actually have quite a few options.

This has already been covered. For dominion voting machines at least, the logs are a huge source of concern since they can be easily edited.
