People got angrier and angrier at crooked journalists pushing their radical politics on them. They tried to bring down the system, and while they didn't quite pull it off, they gave the system a black eye it has never forgotten.
It was the first semi-organized pushback against SJWs in media.
Games journalists, who are largely a bunch of political hacks who can't get jobs in the MSM were dumping on gamers the same was MSM dumps on farmers. Gamers didn't take it.
The spark was that a gamedev girl (and a psycho) was caught spreading her legs for the journalists, who made her famous in exchange. Her crappy game was a low budget 'choose your own adventure' story, and was free. Also it wasn't actually reviewed, rather bio-pics were done on her.
She's the type who crowdfunds their lifestyle (hipster welfare) and the fame helped. Leftys pass the hat around for people like that in a way you wouldn't believe. But that whole thing was really just the lever that cracked the whole thing open.
