If you can't clean it every month... buy an ak. If you want to be able to bury it in a trash bag dig it up 10 years later and fire it without cleaning... buy an ak.
If you want cool rails, gear, and a short barrel, buy an ar. If you want accuracy and low recoil... buy an ar.
I dispute the accuracy part unless you are building a precision rifle.
AKs are accurate when used as AKs are intended. Especially the new 100 series stuff which you can get 100% US made. Unlike the AR platform they are not simple upper-swap away from being long range toys, but they are badass semi auto rifles that have seen far more war than any number of SCAR/ACR/gimmick rifles.
Check AKOU, ak operator's union. Hes a former Polish soldier when it was still commie. He loves America and a yuge 2A proponent. 1pHe puts aks through the ringer, 5k rounds, dropping them over and over, submerging them in swamp water. He tore up the gen2 PSAK and the listened to him and made great improvements for the gen3.
5.56x45 is almost exactly half the weight of 7.62x39, and .300 blackout, which is arguably pretty close performance-wise to 7.62x39, is only about 20% heavier than 5.56.
One of the downsides of being a civilian is that when you yell "AMMO!", nobody brings you any.
Maybe I'm just overthinking the "what if" scenarios, but since I don't know where that target will be and don't expect to be choppered in (and because I just AIN'T a teenager anymore), I decided to pack light.
Commie lies, Direct impingement gas system is far superior for mud and dirt. It blows the mud out the receiver with every shot. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YAneTFiz5WU The less area for mud and dirt to get in the better, AR wins hands down. AR is lighter, more accurate, less recoil, more deadly with right rounds and can carry more rounds. Eugene Stoner (PBUH) knew the AKs weaknesses and designed the AR around this. THERE is literally no reason to own an AK except if you are one of those people that think the Katana is superior due to muh nippon folded steel weeb types. AKA easily manipulated or biased. Besides AR there are many other Euro weapons that are superior, I would take a p90 any day of the week over AK, especially with military rounds.
The SKS is awesome. I hate it though because it's a Commie gun. But it has never malfunctioned on me. Not once. I feed it shitty Chinese surplus ammo, corrosive as fuck. Crappy bargain bin ammo. The fuckin thing just fires. I'd shovel gravel in there and the dammed stupid thing woulds still fire. It's a Soviet SKS, not a Chinese one. It has too many parts and is on par with the AR for being a pain in the ass for cleaning. I thought I would put a fancy stock and optics on it. After a few thousand rounds I decided not to bother. I keep it as Stalin wanted it to be. It will never be anything more than an SKS, but it's my Commie gun. After a nuclear war, there will on ly be 2 things left. Cockroaches, and SKS.
Im not saying don't buy, if you like it buy. I still have never shot one full auto :(. Only thing I am getting at is its a myth just like the katana as I mentioned. AK mudtest: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DX73uXs3xGU
I've shot one full auto. I couldn't hit a target 25 yards away with burst shot. Full auto was just a waste of ammo. Plus it was a Vietnam era bring back so it was heavier than a modern one. My friends father was an arms dealer and had his FFL class 3 license.
After watching the InRange mud test video I no longer believed the mud thing. But why the hell are you gonna scoop a shovel full of mud into the receiver? One thing that the AR hates more than the AK is sand. And I live in the desert.

Thats a fair point. There's not much chance of operating these things in burst for a civilian application, so I concede the point.
However, full auto or burst ak is notoriously low accuracy after the first shot.
Yeah, barrel wobbles like fuck
Try a binary trigger for bursts.

Also if you have to lug your own ammo, buy an AR.

More fun facts: one pound of ammo equals about 10 12GA shells, 19 rounds of 7.62x39, 21 rounds of .45ACP, 38 rounds of 9mm, or 133 rounds of .22LR.
Oh, and you can get an attachment for an AR that lets you use blanks to shoot golf balls, in case you can't get the cart.
Can AR golfing be a thing? Please? Say first shot with AR rest with clubs? How far do they shoot?
LOL
NATO 7.62. Used in the FN and the good old M-14. Yes, it's heavy and a pain in the ass, but you only need to hit the target once.

When fires bolt opens, AR small hole AK huge part opens lets in dirt. Watch video, They test AK and it fails.
I'd buy an older AK or SKS for its collector value.

Perfect summary for the SKS.

I would not use it in a war,
I would not buy it in a store,
I do not like the black AR,
It is not from USSR.
I do not like them, Sam-I-Am
I much prefer the Abakan.
Would you like it from the states?
Or would you like a snowy place?
Would you like to shoot it fast?
Or would like it from the past?
I’m sure you’ll like a new AR,
And not something from the Czar.
I would not use it in the mud,
I would not use it to spill blood,
I do not like Gene Stoner’s gun
I don’t find maintenance to be fun.
The only rifles that I love
Come from Mikhail Kalashnikov
