I think the same guys who wear 5.11 are the guys who have all the decals and stickers on their trucks of firearm brands. You won't see that shit on my windshield or bumper. But inside the car however, there is likely at least one loaded firearm in my vehicle if I am in that vehicle. I don't believe in "truck guns" or if you keep in your car all the time. I think it's mostly pointless. You won't be able to get to it in time and it will more likely be stolen one day. It wouldn't be too hurtful to lose an old gun, but id feel bad about being responsible for arming a scumbag.

Off topic from your point, but out here in the sticks (and I'm pretty sure where the ancient origins of the term lie...) the truck gun is what you keep jammed behind the passenger seat or hanging in the back window for when you pull into the driveway to see a coyote trying to dig into the chicken coop. I don't think it ever clicked for me that people were talking about it as a self-defense against humans tool until I read your post here. I carry a handgun in the vehicle when I'm going somewhere for self-defensee, but when I'm on my land I throw a .22 in the passenger seat as the "truck gun". Or a shotgun if it's hunting season.

If you're not parking on public roads or in parking lots I think it's fine. I am mostly speaking of the people in suburban and urban areas even that keep an extra gun in the car for self defense. And usually a handgun.

I understand. I guess that was my long-winded way of saying that I didn't know anyone actually did that ot used the term "truck gun" to describe it.

Maybe we need a new term. Sedan gat?

Completely agree. A truck gun is entirely pointless unless you are a LEO. If you have time to get to a truck gun, you have time to take defensive cover.

In what situation would you use it? If it’s road rage, good luck claiming self defense, at least in Texas.

Active shooter? I wouldn’t run into an active shooter scene with an AR, that’s a good way to become target practice for the responding swat team.

Plus you have to run to your car, grab the gun, rack the charging handle then you can engage.

Trust me, I tried to justify a truck gun because man I want to roll around with my AR-15 but I just couldn’t find a benefit to outweigh the risk of theft. I just settled on a Glock with a RMR and TLR7 and trained my ass off with it, as that is the gun I’m most likely to use to protect life.
