Ayn Rand was an atheist. Selfishness as morality messags a huge failure. Capitalism is good because of Christianity. The pilgrims came here for freedom of religion. They compacted together, at first trying to live a communal lifestyle. William Bradford saw they were dying and implemented private property into their community. From that they flourished. They were godly people, and that is what led to the rise of capitalism.
I was thinking about some things along those lines myself today while listening to a lecture. I'm not an objectivist but I find a lot of value in her work. I'm not a Christian either but you could call me an ally.
She has some great arguments and defenses of capitalism, particularly against communism.
Capitalism really deserves defending all on its own I think, it brings freedom and prosperity anywhere it goes. The Marxists blame capitalism for just about anything now and it's widely popular just to ignorantly hate it. They confuse cronyism with capitalism which doesn't help matters.
I urge you to become a Christian! That will give you hope no political movement can!
Capitalism has allowed corruption to sneak in because of the lack of Christian principles brought on through ease of life because of economic prosperity. People began to believe that their prosperity was tied only to their own aspirations in general. This goes back to just after the industrial revolution. Life became a lot easier for people.
Marx made a correct observation about the disparity of corrupt capitalism. He just did not properly identify what to do about it. He called for the destruction of morality. We ought to have called for more morality.
Capitalism for all its flaws has created more charitable organizations and saved more lives than any other system.
Capitalism is not good bc of Christianity, not sure where you get that from. If anything I'd say it's good sometimes in spite of it. The pilgrims were collectivist theocrats that did not promote capitalism.
I was raised Christian and go to church, but there are a lot of Christians that use theology to back leftist politics, and honestly it's pretty easy to do. Also to say trump is "mean, selfish etc." People trying to be politically godly and moral => economic leftism. Yeah she was a strict atheist but she has valid points about what happens to people when their loose their sense of individual self.
Trashing her because of her "selfish morals" makes you sound commie tbh.
I am a capitalist through and through. I disagree with Rand on the basis of her moral system. I will produce as much as I can because it is what is right for others. I produce something because I am responsible to do it. Christianity teaches that much better than selfishness that Rand preaches. She missed the point. It is not so based a reason as that. We should not waste our talents, but spend them wisely. There is value in labor and profit. Those are biblical principles.
No one is saying that Ayn Rand thought of Capitalism, she was a great advocate for it. As far as selfishness goes, it is her explanation of human psychology, as in everything is done in personal benefit, such as: you do great things for your family because of a self benefit a love for your family, you give money to homeless person because it makes you feel good and so on. It was her affirmation of human nature, where every transaction is beneficial to each party, otherwise no transaction would occur. If you are interested, I would suggest to read her writings instead of reading caricature that her detractors created out of her writings.
