They're great dogs. We had a German Shepherd right up until he had a volvulus in June. Our new black lab puppy is a great dog, but there's nothing quite like a shepherd. My neighbor has a 100+-pound GSD as well as a Doberman puppy (thankfully they're getting along pretty well) and there's one person in the area who has 3 GSDs/mixes, one of whom is missing a paw and another is missing an entire leg. Big dogs in general aren't nearly as scary as most make them out to be. So sweet when they get familiar with you and generally don't bark at strangers on walks.
