I don't believe the AG has the power to fire the Director of the FBI. Prior to 1968, the AG had the power to appoint and remove the Director of the FBI. In 1968 Congress amended that and gave the power to appoint to the President.

Deputy Director is a career agent and a San Diego police officer prior to that. I'd take him over an ex-DOJ swamp rat lawyer like Wray any day.
