Not sure yet, maybe she ran away? But under really weird circumstances.
Ask the parents if it's possible she has social media (including phone apps) that they don't have access to. It's a very common MO for sex traffickers to groom young girls via these means towards running away of their own volition. This is now a multi billion dollar industry and the people who do it are very good at it. It's unfortunately possible if this is the case, that she is still at high risk of this (or something very similar) recurring. If this is the case, it's likely they will need specialist help.
