My hot take - it was an engineered virus. Long incubation and deadly. Not a great combo for a virus to sustain itself and multiply like biology would have it do. So at first it was super deadly - but as it’s mutated to reach a more sustainable equilibrium, it became less deadly and has a shorter incubation period.
