I believe it wasn't specifically COVID-19. We have an outbreak of a new strain of disease every year. Most of the time, it doesn't come to anything, because there are already countless ever-mutating diseases floating around the population. Anything truly deadly gets nipped in the bud.
The reason COVID-19 got so popular is because the culture controllers needed an attack vector, and a disease is a convenient scare. It's invisible; it's spreads from close contact; it's not intuitively understandable. Avian flu, swine flu, zika virus, ebola, SARS, or MERS could've gone exactly the same way, but the progressive elites didn't need to be so aggressive back when they were popular, so they got abused for some clickbait then thrown away.
