Last Wednesday my friend and apprentice cut his thumb on my tablesaw. I was around the corner 20 feet away but it happened so fast he already had his thumb wrapped in a towel and he opted to have my assistant rush him immediately to the ER instead of have me dress it in gauze first. Split second decision making.
I moved the trailer out of the way so they had a free path and hopped in my truck and sped after them. He didn’t have his phone.
Only person was allowed inside the ER waiting room. My assistant is 11 weeks pregnant. It was cold and raining. She had to wait outside while I was in the lobby. I could have been alllowed back to the treatment room but if I did that then his mom couldn’t switch with me. Once I knew for sure she was on her way I waited outside in the cold and rain with my pregnant assistant. For an hour.
He came out of the accident with best possible outcome- fully functional thumb but with traumatic flesh wound. But he had to be by himself for an hour bc he had to choose between my company and his mother (who was an hour away.) we couldn’t trade off. I thought the poor kid’s thumb was dangling off until the evening when I finally got to talk to him.
I made a small scene. The absurdity of the situation was so apparent that the police inside at the entrance and one employees of the hospital came outside to apologize and make small talk and reassure us.
Everyone there knew how how fucking stupid the situation was but we all just went along with it. 🤦♂️
