In the territory we occupied we fought the VC militias and guerillas. In the enemy territory we fought the NVA. It would be like 4 separate militaries. Whoever runs the government would ensure that the generals are loyal to them. It would start with sectarian fighting in the civilian population. Those sects form small trusted groups then militias then the overarching organization. The ruling govt would send the military in to "keep the peace" but really arrest and kill leaders of the both factions as they have no need to take sides. There would be mass desertion and one faction would amass in the real military and the other in the guerrilla military. This is roughly what occurs in modern civil wars. America being different in military structure than most countries ebbs on a need for stability and hates power vacuums, they would crush anyone before it got out of hand, right left or in between. Slightly drunk but this is my best bet from living through the Arab spring, Iraq and Syria.
modern civil war also tends to require people to be miserable. no housing, no food, no jobs, no internet, no power. Americans may seem to be quite mad at each other but they aren't anywhere near kill your neighbor level mad. I detest democrats but my neighbor Sue is a kind woman with different ideas than me. We aren't there. Now there is usually a spark that sets things ablaze, the shot heard round the world, death of the fish monger, bread prices. It can happen out of the blue but it is rare in western civilization. As of right now in America it would have to be the assassination or attempt on Donald Trump, that is the only thing I could see kicking it off and that is only because the left would celebrate the event causing the right to become infuriated and rightfully so.
