I am from the UK and we read 1984, Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451 in school.
We were encouraged to research and analyse these works, drawing conclusions and discussing the themes.
Funnily enough I went to a well funded catholic school named "John F. Kennedy". Christian values were taught very strongly and JFKs pictures and inspirational quotes were all over the buildings. A smart uniform and strict code of conduct were rigidly enforced.

It's not to late to read, and act upon, its information. But, there may come a time when it will be, if the information doesn't educate a critical mass of people in our country soon.

I was in high school in the mid- 2000s and read Brave New World, The Lord of the Flies, Fahrenheit 451, and other dystopia novels in high school.
Back then we had mandatory "feminist analysis" and I think maybe even "marxist analysis" (not sure anymore) of books we read but everyone just rolled their eyes and made up bullshit and didn't care.
It's weird thinking back and seeing the seeds of where all this insanity was coming from, and not realizing its significance at the time.
Maybe it's mentioned, but I doubt you would still find teachers passionately cautioning you against the dangers of totalitarian regimes. If they do, it would be some dumb activist projecting their evil against Trump, as usual.
I wouldn't read too much into the fact you leaned left as a youngster, I think it's perfectly normal and I did too. That usually gets cured by dealing with incompetence and starting to pay taxes.
What scares me is I get the impression kids are being taught to look at the finger and not where it's pointing. To fear freedom, democracy, true equality and economic opportunities because you can't really benefit from them if you're given a crap education. Hence devaluing those amazing privileges
When they start questioning themselves into adulthood, they don't have that backup knowledge on stand-by to help them through the process. That's the sabotage.
Good teachers don't expect you to fully learn things on the spot, they just give you the tools you'll need when they're no longer there to guide you
