I am from the UK and we read 1984, Animal Farm and Fahrenheit 451 in school.
We were encouraged to research and analyse these works, drawing conclusions and discussing the themes.
Funnily enough I went to a well funded catholic school named "John F. Kennedy". Christian values were taught very strongly and JFKs pictures and inspirational quotes were all over the buildings. A smart uniform and strict code of conduct were rigidly enforced.
From their mission statement:
Encourage all to aim high, be resilient and rise to challenges, knowing that any obstacle can be overcome with faith and determination
Provide teaching that engages, motivates, and develops our students as confident, skilled learners
Ensure that our students enjoy their schooldays and feel valued as individual members of a community inspired by the teachings of Christ
Whilst that amazing school still exists few are lucky enough to attend such a place.
