He donated it to his own foundation! Of which most of it is sitting collecting interest on the stock market and a small billion is used to fund medical research, for which he gets ownership in return no doubt. Media is for sale.
Once you have enough money to buy everything you would want to buy, you use the rest to reshape the world according to your wishes. Somehow this gets called 'charity' and is tax exempt.

In the book Showstopper, detailing Windows NT development, Dave Cutler who was a close guy to Bill Gates said that Bill was "overrated". Imo Dave was far more important to the company than Bill so his statement weighs quite a ton.
