I'd suggest you research civil wars to learn what they are like - none of this is new, it's all happened before many times in many places. First there are peaceful mass protests. If that doesn't work and/or there are state-sponsored attempts to break them, they turn into skirmishes. Under determined attempts to crush them with armed and forceful state response they can become military engagements, where the military gets partitioned up and/or disabled and irregular units eventually become formal units until there is partition or domination.
