Good tools are what make work worth doing. Everyone who has ever put any effort into doing their job right becomes enamored with their tools. This is why, for example, software guys bicker over the best editor and the best programming language. (Emacs+clang, fwiw.)
I've got a 1/2" wrench with a floppy socket on the other end that has been my favorite tool for more than 30 years. I was a traveling engineer for many years and that tool was invaluable. I kept it in my shaving kit so I would never lose it. It might sound silly to a lot of people but when it's a tool you use the most and it's a unique, difficult to replace tool you learn to appreciate it more than just any tool.
Doesn't sound silly to me at all. My personal favorite is a pair of slip joint pliers. You'll find me in some dark, uncomfortable, dusty, nasty place, squeezing things really hard but with ease with these guys.

Love a good pair of channel locks, myself. My favorite tool i own is a Dewalt grinder. That thing has some miles on it, grinds like new.
