They were legit to start out, like spezdit was. Then starting about 18 years ago, Leftie/commie professors (and then later teachers too) would give extra credit for students to go and "contribute" on wikipedia, and this had steadily grown from a trickle to a flood. By 2005, there wasn't enough anti-commies to keep up, and it's been pretty steady downhill since (like the rest of Academia or most non-profits and churches, news, professional sports, etc too.)

Things got worse (like all other big tech) with their current CEO since 2016.

The last interview I saw with their (current) CEO is a pro- kultural enricher marxist, though she probably doesn't realize it; she's a perfect FDR-type fool whom might be redpilled someday. Like all Non-profits and institutions, it's possible to take it back from the Marxists; and rebuild it.

Wikipedia is but one of the Institutions in the Marxist's Long March through the Institutions. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_long_march_through_the_institutions

The solution to the Marxists/marxism isn't to keep ceding them ground or territory. The Marxists take over the institutions and use them to their ends, and when they are done serving their purpose; they burn them to the ground. We can't "win" by speeding the institutions' destruction.

CRT Ban, 1776-Commission, and many other things will turn the tide against the marxists; and their allies; but it's going to take lots of work by lots of Liberty Loving People to rebuild America's and the Western Worlds Institutions to clean marxism all the way out.
