I haven't had this fail in any situation. Most of these employees are burnt out and not interested in a mask confrontation with a stranger because people who know masks are bullshit are tired of this and won't be quiet about it.
Try smiling and saying "no thanks" without slowing your stride. 100% effective for me so far.

As a grocery store employee I agree. Plus, any sane person doesn't want to be labeled an asshole for enforcing a stupid order on their customers.
PS: I made all the mask signs disappear at my workplace. KEK
