I'm sorry, but this is just not true. Carbs literally fall into the category of nonessential nutrients, unlike fat and protein which are both essential. Only babies need some external carbs (hence breastfeeding, in which the baby gets milk which has lots of natural carbs), but certainly not adults. The liver (except for babies) actually creates the amount of glucose your body needs without you needing to consume any carbs. There are lots of "zero carb"/carnivore individuals who have been going for 10, 15, 20+ years who not only do not have any related medical problems, but are doing exceedingly well compared to the average person. Nutrition studies over the decades have been infected by grain and sugar companies and vegan groups, and hence there is a lot of bias. But also many of the methodologies used in nutrition studies are absolute garbage for actually figuring out the effects of nutrition.
You absolutely do not need carbs to survive. Carbs are just complex sugars. If you give it sugars and carbs it will definitely use those first as it's way easier to turn carbs into glucose than it is to break down fats and proteins. But that's counterproductive. You want your body to burn fat, not the more easily broken down carbs, and it will only do so if there aren't enough carbs to support you.
The key for me is strength training. Muscle burns calories so by strength training you increase your bodies caloric requirements and burn fat faster. Don't worry about "getting too big" because you have to eat like a horse to do that. On restricted calories you will lean our and tone up.
It took me a couple of weeks to get adjusted but now I do mostly 20/4. I pretty much eat whatever I want but I cut soda out completely. I also walk my two 60+ lb dogs daily so that helps, too!

Nutrition studies over the decades have been infected by grain and sugar companies and vegan groups, and hence there is a lot of bias. But also many of the methodologies used in nutrition studies are absolute garbage for actually figuring out the effects of nutrition.
You absolutely do not need carbs to survive. Carbs are just complex sugars. If you give it sugars and carbs it will definitely use those first as it's way easier to turn carbs into glucose than it is to break down fats and proteins. But that's counterproductive. You want your body to burn fat, not the more easily broken down carbs, and it will only do so if there aren't enough carbs to support you.
The key for me is strength training. Muscle burns calories so by strength training you increase your bodies caloric requirements and burn fat faster. Don't worry about "getting too big" because you have to eat like a horse to do that. On restricted calories you will lean our and tone up.
