Unpopular opinion: Repeal the Gun Control Act of 1968 which makes felons (and later laws which makes several misdemeanor offenders) ineligible to protect themselves with a firearm.
Our Founding Fathers were considered "felons"/"convicts" by the Crown. Under this type of standard, they wouldn't be able to defend themselves. In fact, some had been charged with crimes like piracy and smuggling, that by today's standards would've made them ineligible for this.
This should especially be true with people with non-violent offenses. You sold drugs 10 years ago? Committed forgery? Have turned your life around? Now have a family and a home? You should be allowed to protect it without fear of retribution for doing so.
